In the long run, the solution to the problems with the old Crain Avenue bridge is to tear it down — but we can’t do that until we’ve got the new bridge up and running — which is still 18 months off in the future. In the meantime that leaves some 10,000 cars a day bumping and grinding their way over the old war torn bridge much to the chagrin of their vehicle suspension.
Obviously we don’t want to pour too much money in the old bridge when we know that it’s got less than 2 years left to serve us but at this point I think we all agree, enough is enough — it’s time to put a little money in bridge asphalt before another winter season descends upon us and digs a few more holes in the bridge.
The City is working with Portage County (it’s a County bridge) to go ahead, bite the bullet, and make some necessary surface pavement repairs to the old bridge on Wednesday, September 8th. That’s great news on September 9th, but it does mean that in order to pave, the old bridge will be closed from 8 am to 4 pm on September 8th (and Monday, September 13th) to give paving contractors the room they need to get things in better shape.
