The City is in the process of working with R&R Sanitation to initiate a new citywide trash collection service. Those residents that were anxious to take advantage of the new low rates, and have already signed up for the new service, will begin receiving that new service in Kent starting today, August 3rd. Even though there’s an 8 month courtesy transition period for folks to officially sign up and make the switch, the Portage County Solid Waste District thought it made sense to go ahead and switch their recycling collection routes to match the new routes that the City set up for R&R to run starting August 3rd citywide. So even if you haven’t begun your new trash service yet your recycling service is making the switch to your new collection day that will be same collection day as your trash once you officially make the switch to R&R Sanitation. Here’s more information on the new recycling collection days.
Putting recycling and trash collection on the same should make things simple to remember — and keep your neighborhood streets quieter 6 days a week — but admittedly during the transition period things could get a little tricky. Starting August 3rd Portage County advised us that they are going to the new route schedule for Kent.

You may also receive calls about the change to the recycling pickup schedule, since some residents may not realize the new pick up schedule starts Monday. Please refer those calls to the Service Department 330-678-8105 or the Portage County Solid Waste Management District at 330-678-8808. We added a reminder about the new recycling schedule on the utility bills that are being mailed today, so that should help remind our residents of the new schedule.
If we receive any calls from residents that have questions, concerns or complaints please refer them to the Service Department 330-678-8105 so that we can work with them to resolve any issues and help this transition go as smoothly as possible.
Here’s a short email that I sent to City Council on Friday that may be useful for you as well.
I heard from our Public Service Department that R & R has already signed up approximately 4,000 of the 5,400 households that mailings went out to. They will be starting to run the new routes on Monday but they will only be picking up those who have officially signed up to start now. If you receive any calls from residents who say they put their trash out and it was not collected we have been asked to refer them to R & R at 330-628-9609 so that they can determine if they have signed up. R & R has assured us that if anyone that has signed up and was missed they will be picked up no later than the next business day.
