Street Repairs

One of the early signs of Spring is the smell of fresh blossoms on the trees and hot mix asphalt on our streets.  The flower blooms may be more fragrant but after a hard winter it sure is nice to see winter’s damage on our streets being repaired with a permanent hot asphalt patch so I’m not sure which smell is sweeter.  Here’s a note from our City Engineer, Jim Bowling, recommending staying clear of Lincoln Street today since it’s scheduled for some street repair work.  The Engineering Department is gearing up for the annual street repair program and Jim has included a summary of where they’re at in their process.

Last year, Jim uploaded the street paving information on to the City’s web site and he is continuing to do that in 2009 as well.  Here’s the link:  City Street Maintenance Web Page.

2009 UPDATE FROM JIM BOWLING CITY ENGINEER

There are 3 main aspects to the street repair program:

1. Asphalt mill and resurface – This is where we take off the top course of asphalt and place and new top course down. The streets we will do this year have been determined and are posted on our web site.

2.  Chip Seal – This is used on some smaller residential streets in the city. It includes placing a layer of seal coat and stone on the street. The streets to be done are being finalized now and will be posted on the web in a week or two.

3. Crack Seal – This is a maintenance measure to prevent further deterioration of streets by sealing the cracks that allow water to penetrate the street surface and degrade the pavement. These streets are the last to be finalized and will be posted on the web site later this Spring when they become available.

We started putting this information online because of the public’s interest in the issue. On the main project page for the streets we also included the next couple of years anticipated program. This is a fluctuating list based on prices and weather but it does provide the public with a sense of what’s coming and when.

Jim is scheduled to give City Council an update on the street program in May.
